An important aspect of the Tioughnioga River is the scenery, which ranges from residential and
farmland to near wilderness. The gorge through which much of the river flows was formed by
glacial melt waters at the end of the last ice age. The resulting narrow, steep-sided ravine is
crowned with mature hardwoods, giving the lower portions of the river a character usually found
only in vastly more remote areas.
