Identifying Characteristics
The body is olive brown to grey. Long, cylindrical body. Blunt snout; upper lip thinner than lower lip. Large scales. Y bones are located along both sides. Their flesh is good for making fish patties and smoking.
Habits and Habitat
Found in almost any water condition - clear or muddy, fast or slow, clean or polluted. Widely distributed. Seems to prefer large streams and deep-water impoundments. A bottom feeder whose diet consists of insect larvae, crustaceans, and algae. Spawns in the spring, often in trout streams.
Tackle and Techniques
Use light- to medium-weight tackle and 4- to 6-pound-test line. Fish on the bottom with worms, dew worms, or dough balls. Suckers hit very lightly.
