Identifying Characteristics
The body is olive green to bronze in color. Long dorsal fin. A pair of fleshy barbels are located on each side of the upper jaw. Large scales, each with a dark spot at its base and a dark edge. Has cross-hatched pattern on sides.
Habits and Habitat
Can tolerate a variety of aquatic environments, but prefers warm streams or lakes with muddy bottoms. Bottom feeders, carp eat both plant and animal material. Tolerant of pollution. A hard-fighting fish that can get quite large. Spawns along shorelines in the spring.
Tackle and Techniques
Use light- to medium-weight tackle and 6- to 8-pound-test line. Fish on the bottom using a slip sinker. Dough balls and worms work well.

50 pounds, 4 ounces; caught by Charles Primeau, Sr. in the Tomhannock Reservoir on May 12, 1995.
