Identifying Characteristics
|
|
Olive to brown, with light spots scattered along its length.
Spots are irregular and wavy along the back, becoming progressively more circular towards
the belly.
A few bright red spots surrounded by a blue ring are found on the sides.
Bottom fins are orange to pink, with a white leading edge followed by a dark stripe.
9 to 10 rays in anal fin.

Habits and Habitat
|
|
Prefers cold, clear waters; seldom found in water over 65øF.
Usually found in headwaters of streams and rivers.
Has very low tolerance for warm water or pollution.
Feeds on insects, worms, and crayfish.
Spawns in fall.

Tackle and Techniques
|
|
Use ultra-light spinning or fly-fishing tackle.
Excellent quarry for fly fishing. Can be taken on a variety of dry flies, wet flies, or nymphs.
Small spoons, spinners, and live bait such as worms and crayfish also work well.
