Identifying Characteristics

Body is olive to golden brown, grading to yellow or orange towards belly.
Black gill flap with red tip.
Large pectoral fins.
Small mouth.
Sides are mottled or lightly striped.
Light blue-green lines radiate back from mouth and eye region.

Habits and Habitat
|
|
Prefers warm, weedy waters, especially in lakes and ponds.
Usually found close to shore near weeds, logs, docks, etc.
|

Tackle and Techniques
|
|
Use ultra-light spinning or fly-fishing tackle.
Small spinners and jigs work well, but natural baits such as small worms are the most
productive.
They provide good fishing for children in the summer.
