Identifying Characteristics
|
|
The body is silver gray and somewhat opalescent.
Humped back and blunt snout.
Rounded tail.
Deep notch in dorsal fin, with very long rear section.
Drum are strong fighters, especially if large.

Habits and Habitat
|
|
Found in large rivers and lakes.
Prefers clear waters, but tolerates turbid, silty areas.
Stays near bottom in 10 to 40 feet of water.
Usually feeds on snails, mollusks, and crayfish.

Tackle and Techniques
|
|
Use light- to medium-weight tackle and 6- to 14-pound-test line.
Live baits such as worms, minnows, and crayfish work well.
Occasionally, drum will hit on small spinners and spoons.
Keep bait and lures near the bottom.
