Identifying Characteristics

Back is silvery green, quickly grading to silvery gray on the sides.
Small head.
Deeply forked tail.
Thin, dark lines run horizontally across body.
Protruding lower jaw

Habits and Habitat
|
|
Prefers large, deep streams, rivers, and medium- to large-size lakes with clear, quiet waters.
Usually found in deep waters in daytime and the shallows at twilight.
Often feeds in dense schools in shallow water right at the surface.
Feeds on insects and small fish.
Spawns in streams from May to August.

Tackle and Techniques
|
|
Use light to ultra-light spinning tackle.
Live minnows or worms are the preferred baits.
Imitation minnow lures and Mr. Twisters produce well, as do small spinners.
The best time to catch white bass is when they are feeding in schools, often just offshore.
